Questions to ask before you enroll in a trade program
- Page last updated October 25, 2026
A practical checklist for students and parents — accreditation, tools, exam fees, refunds, and job-placement claims — before anyone signs.
Quick take
If a school cannot answer cost, credential, and licensing questions in writing, slow down. Use our schools directory to find institutions, then verify on the school catalog, state approval lists, and (for apprenticeships) apprenticeship.gov.
Credential & quality
- What credential do I earn (certificate, diploma, associate), and is the school accredited — by whom?
- Does this program meet the hours my state needs for the license I want?
- Can I see the program outline and completion rates?
Money
- What is the all-in cost if I finish on time? If I need longer?
- What is included vs extra (tools, books, uniforms, exam fees, drug tests)?
- What is the refund policy by week or percentage completed?
- Which aid can I use here (Pell, Workforce Pell, WIOA, state grants)? See How to pay for trade school.
Jobs & claims
- When you say “job placement,” what exactly is counted — and can I see the definition in writing?
- Which local employers hired recent completers? Can I speak with one alum?
- Is this a registered apprenticeship pathway, or classroom only? Compare trade school vs apprenticeship.
Schedule & support
- Day, night, or hybrid — and what is the expected weekly time commitment?
- What happens if I fail a module or miss clinical/lab hours?
- Who is my point of contact for disability accommodations or tutoring?
What we will not tell you
We will not certify that any school’s placement rate is accurate. Directory presence means public Scorecard/IPEDS data matched our filters — not an endorsement. Schools and sponsors can’t pay for a better rating or placement.
